Should you get a dog for your child?  Getting a pet is a commitment that should last the lifetime of the pet (10+ years, depending upon breed. Make sure your child is old enough to help with a dog, because they will learn responsibility by feeding, walking, playing with and taking care of the pet.  Teaching a puppy tricks (with the parent's help) is a fun way to teach obedience!  A pet is a wonderful addition to a home, but keep in mind how much time they will take.  If no one is home all day, you will need to consider the options you have and get a breed that works with your lifestyle. Below are some helpful ideas:

1) The installation of a doggie door into your back yard (and teaching the young dog to use it).

2) Take your lunch break, or ask a friend, neighbor or family member to let the dog out during the day.

3) A professional dog sitter who will visit your house to let the dog out at intervals during the day.

4) Doggie Day Care

5) An In-Home Kennel * Unless left too long, an adult dog will rarely pee or poop in their own sleep space. Young puppies can not be kenneled all day and must be let out frequently.  As they age, the time between being taken outside can be slowly lengthened until they can actually be kenneled all day.   Opinions differ, but I don't agree with "pee pee pads", it is better to teach them to go outside.  If you have a porch they can stay on, set up an artificial turf area of that porch for them to use.  This would also be easy to keep clean.

6) How much room do you have?  If you have a large, fenced yard and a big house, you may want a big dog.  If you have an apartment or live in the city, choose a small dog. Some breeds are better with children than others.

Attached is an article from Good Housekeeping which lists breeds of dog and simple explanations for each.

If none of these suggestions are viable to you, perhaps you should begin with a hampster or guinea pig or investigate the idea of getting a CAT!  :)
